First prize: ‘Practical Photography’ competition

Practical Photography Magazine Photo Assignment:
People and Places

The assignment topic for the competition was People and Places and called for a portrait that placed the subject in his or her own environment.

On a visit to the Black Country Living Museum — a reconstructed Victorian village on the outskirts of Dudley in the West Midlands — I visited the old chemist’s shop and encountered this wonderful old character describing his experiences of working in the original shop (which had been demolished and rebuilt at the museum) when he was a lad.

I was struck by the reflections of the windows in the man’s spectacles and the jars of pills and potions in the background and also by his caring, sympathetic manner as he told his story.
